Poodle Club of Central California: History

Poodle Club of Central California was founded in San Francisco in the late 1950s, during a period when Poodles were one of the most popular breeds of dogs.  There was no problem reaching membership numbers that convinced the American Kennel Club to approve this club to offer sanctioned matches and then licensed specialties.

From the beginning, both Conformation and Obedience classes have been offered at all P.C.C.C.  matches and specialties, and the club has been fortunate to have member judges approved for both types of competition who have encouraged competition in Conformation & Obedience events to spotlight the abilities of the Poodle.
Two members, Beverly Cobb & Jacklyn Hungerland were also instrumental in persuading the American Kennel Club to allow Poodles to participate in Hunting Trials and earn specific titles in Hunting events.

The first specialty was held in San Francisco on January 15, 1960.  Harold Ringrose was President, Dolly Trauner (founder of CERF) was Secretary, and Jacklyn Boyd Hungerland was a Director and Chief Ring Steward.  Included among owners of the 184 dogs entered were some names that will be familar to readers of Poodle history: Beverly Goebel Cobb, Frank & Susan Dale, Margaret Durney, Phyllis Tworuk Greer, Lois Nurmi, Rita & Ed Perko, Tom & Ann Stevenson - to name a few.

For many years, all events were held within San Francisco, and there was a traditional match and pot-luck held on July 4th.  As space in San Francisco became more difficult to use, venues in San Mateo, Ignacio, San Rafael, and now Pleasanton have been sites of successful events.

Since there were a few years when PC.C.C. held two specialties, our landmark 50th Specialty was held on October 21, 2006, on the grounds of the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.

We are now part of a strong Poodle weekend, offering two specialties sandwiched between a Skyline Dog Fanciers of San Mateo County’s all-breed show and Del Valle Dog Club's two all-breed shows (largest all breed shows in the U. S.).

Poodle Club of Central California is a member club of Poodle Club of America, and has hosted two Regional Specialties for PCA, in 1975 and 1983.
